Polyester is plastic. It just doesn't look like it.
It goes by a dozen names on a care label — polyester, acrylic, nylon, "performance blend". They are all petroleum-based synthetics, and they all sit against skin that is thinner and more absorbent than yours.
- Synthetic fibres trap heat and sweat instead of letting skin breathe.
- They hold odour, which is why the shirt still smells after a wash.
- For eczema-prone skin, the friction and the trapped moisture are the problem.
- A care label has to list fibre content. It's the fastest thing on the garment to check.

How do I check a label myself?
Look for the fibre content line on the care tag. If it says polyester, acrylic or nylon — in any percentage — that portion is synthetic.
Is organic cotton actually different to wear?
It breathes rather than trapping heat and moisture, which is the difference most parents notice first on skin that reacts.
