The indoor-arrival habit

If you change one thing this winter, change this: take the mid layer off when you get indoors, not twenty minutes later when the child is already flushed.

It sounds trivial and it is the highest-return habit available, because it prevents the damp-warm state entirely rather than managing it afterwards. It also makes the choice of mid layer a practical decision rather than an aesthetic one — a cardigan or pinafore comes off in seconds without disturbing anything underneath, while a pullover means an argument and a static shock.

Laundry in winter

  • Skip fabric softener. It coats fibres and reduces breathability — the opposite of what a base layer needs.
  • Use less detergent. Residue stays in the fabric and sits against skin, and winter clothing is worn for longer stretches between washes.
