It is a fair question, and it is being asked a lot: if microplastics are turning up in oceans, in air, and now in human blood, is the cotton in your child's t-shirt part of the problem too?
The short answer is no — cotton is cellulose, a plant fibre, not a petrochemical plastic. A 100% cotton garment cannot shed microplastics, because there is no plastic in it to shed.
The longer answer is more interesting, and a cotton brand has an obvious incentive to skip it. Cotton does shed microfibres, cotton microfibres turn up in environmental samples in large numbers, and a systematic review published in 2026 argues that chemically processed natural fibres should not be assumed harmless just because they are natural. The direct answer
No. Cotton does not contain microplastics, and 100% cotton cannot shed them.
Microplastics are, by definition, small fragments of synthetic polymer — polyester, polyethylene, nylon, acrylic, polystyrene. These come from petrochemicals. Cotton is cellulose grown in a field. There is no polymer chain in a cotton fibre for a washing machine to break into plastic fragments.
So if the label on your child's shirt genuinely says 100% cotton, that garment is not a source of microplastic pollution. That is the whole answer to the question as usually asked.
Where it actually gets complicated: blends
The problem is that most children's clothing is not 100% anything. A "cotton" t-shirt is very often a cotton-polyester blend, sometimes labelled CVC or "cotton rich". Jersey with stretch usually contains elastane. Fleece is almost always polyester. Every one of those synthetic components sheds microplastic fibres in the wash, and the marketing on the front of the garment has no obligation to make that obvious.
This is the single most useful habit to build: read the fibre content label, not the product name. Composition disclosure is a legal requirement, so the truth is always on the label even when the front of the packaging is emphasising something else.

The part most cotton brands leave out
“Cotton is not plastic” is true. “Cotton sheds nothing” is not.
Every fabric sheds fibres when it is agitated in water. Cotton sheds cotton. Those fibres are cellulose rather than polymer, so they are not microplastics — but they are microfibres, and they show up in environmental sampling in very large numbers. In one body of work reviewed in 2026, 55% of the fibres collected were natural in origin, and 80–88% of those natural fibres were cellulose such as cotton.
The intuitive response is that this does not matter, because natural fibres biodegrade. That is where the 2026 systematic review is genuinely uncomfortable reading for our industry. Reviewing 29 peer-reviewed studies, its authors argue that natural and man-made cellulosic fibres undergo enough chemical processing — dyes, finishes, softeners, wrinkle treatments — that they should be treated as chemically modified systems rather than as inert plant matter. Those additives, and contaminants the fibre picks up in the environment, can prolong how long it persists.
So the honest hierarchy is not natural good, synthetic bad. It is closer to this:
- Synthetic fibres shed persistent plastic. This is the well-evidenced harm and the one worth acting on first.
- Natural fibres shed non-plastic microfibres that degrade faster but are not nothing, particularly once heavily treated.
- Minimally processed natural fibre is the best available option — which is an argument for undyed and low-finish cotton specifically, not for the word "cotton" on a label.

What about health?
This is where we are going to be less satisfying than most pages you will read on the subject.
What is established: plastic particles have been detected and quantified in human blood. A 2022 study measured whole blood from 22 healthy volunteers and found quantifiable plastic particles in most of them, with a mean sum concentration of 1.6 micrograms per millilitre. Polyethylene terephthalate — the polyester family — was among the most commonly identified polymers. Particles have also been reported in other human tissue.
What is not established: what those particles do. Detection is not the same as harm. There is no settled evidence on health outcomes at real-world exposure levels in children, and the honest state of the science is that this is an active research area with large gaps rather than a closed question.
We are not going to tell you that clothing choices will protect your child's health, because that claim cannot currently be supported. What we can say is narrower and defensible: a garment with no synthetic content cannot contribute synthetic microfibres, and reducing what you release into water and air is a reasonable thing to do while the science catches up.
What actually reduces shedding
In rough order of effect, and none of it requires buying an entirely new wardrobe:
- Choose 100% natural fibre where the garment allows it. Everyday tops, shirts, dresses and trousers rarely need synthetic content. Waterproofs and swimwear genuinely do — that is a sensible trade, not a failure.
- Wash less often, and wash full loads. A fuller drum means less garment-on- garment abrasion, which is what breaks fibres off in the first place.
- Wash cooler. Lower temperatures have been associated with less fibre release, and it is better for the clothes as well.
- Fit a washing machine filter if you can. Independent testing of retrofit filters has found capture rates in the region of 78–90% depending on the device. This is the single highest-impact intervention available to a household.
- Skip the tumble dryer where practical. Drying releases fibres to air as well as water.
How to read a label properly
Three phrases that do not mean what shoppers usually assume:
- “Cotton rich” / “CVC” — a blend. There is polyester in it. The composition percentage is on the label.
- “Natural fibres” on the front of a package — not a composition statement. Check the actual percentages.
- “Bamboo” — almost always bamboo viscose, a regenerated cellulose fibre. Not plastic, but heavily chemically processed, and not the raw plant fibre the name suggests.
